Today is Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday – the first day of the Holy Triduum. These 3 days are the most important days of our faith as Roman Catholics.
Wishing you all a very Blessed Holy Triduum!
In Kerala, we follow some beautiful family traditions during the Holy Triduum. These traditions vary among different Christians but this is how we do it.
On Holy Thursday, we have the tradition of making Indari Appam and Pesaha Pal. All family members gather together, recite the rosary and then it is time to share the Pesaha Appam and Pal. After reading a passage form the Bible, the head of the family divides the Appam and distributes it. It is followed by a simple Vegetarian dinner or even Kanjiyum Payarum if you are not up to dinner after the Pesaha Appam.
Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence. Only one meal is taken during the day which is usually lunch. A very simple Vegetarian Meal is served during lunch. The entire day is spent in prayer and meditation.
Here are some Vegetarian dishes.
- Rice
- Sambar or Moru Kachiyathu or Thakkali Curry
- Thoran or Mezhkkuvaratti
- Theeyal or Thenga Aracha Curry
- Pappadam
Holy Saturday is a day of preparation as we get ready to celebrate the joy of resurrection with the Easter Vigil Mass. After the Easter Vigil Mass, we open our Lent with good food and celebrate the entire Easter Sunday with family. It is truly a joyous day.
Here are some Easter Recipes from my collection.
God Bless You All!
